All over the world there is a constant struggle as to whether poker is a game of chance, or a game of skill. Poker players will tell you that it is a game of skill, but the players who lost a lot of money playing will probably tell you it is simply luck. Recently in Brazil the Sport Ministry labeled the game of poker as being a “mind sport.”The group of people who have headed the charge to get poker recognized as a sport in Brazil is named the Confederacao Brasileira de Texas Hold’em. The CBTH has partaken in this battle since 2009 and finally got a break they had been working for.
Their push for poker to be recognized as a game of skill can best be summed up by the CBTH themselves when they say, “Poker is a competitive discipline, which requires the participant to have intelligence, ability, and intellectual and behavioural skills in order to succeed. The CBTH represents the most extended definition of poker, Texas Hold’em and all the other variants of this game including but not exclusively Omaha, Omaha High / Low, 7 Card Stud, 7 Card Stud High / Low, Razz and Mixed Games.
All over the world poker is becoming more and more widely recognized as a game of skill and strategy as opposed to a game of blind betting and complete luck. Obviously poker has elements of luck in it, but so does any other sport. The IFP, the International Federation of Poker, is another organization who strives to shed light on the myth that poker involves little or no skill.
